Experiencing Joy in the Midst of Pain

Is it truly possible to experience joy while you’re hurting physically, emotionally or perhaps mentally?  Aren’t joy and hurt opposites?

I thought a lot about this during the past week as I endured a week of rough physical pain.  At best, I was getting three hours of sleep at night and during the day I was in constant pain.  Yet, during my pain, God brought to mind so many others from our multi-site church who also deal with lots of pain.  It was a great reminder to pray for you.

Maybe you’re not struggling with physical pain, but rather emotional pain.  Are you hurting immensely from the loss of a loved one?  Do you feel that you’re not worthy of love?  Do you get depressed or overwhelmed by life’s demands—bills, time with the family, projects that need to be done, etc.?

Or are you struggling mentally?  Do problems keep you wide awake at night?  Do you feel as though Satan is constantly screaming in your ear?

Pain is real.  Pain hurts.

However, inner joy, only a joy that God can give you, can be experienced in the midst of your roughest pain.  How?  Inner joy is knowing that no matter what your’e going through, God is right there with you.  It’s also knowing that our time on earth is temporary, and there will come a day when you’ll no longer experience pain.

Jeremy Camp’s song, “There Will Be a Day” serves to remind us that our pain won’t last forever.

“There Will Be A Day”

I try to hold on to this world

With everything I have

But I feel the weight of what it brings,

And the hurt that tries to grab

The many trials that seem to never end,

His word declares this truth,

That we will enter in this rest

With wonders anew

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings

That there will be a place with no more suffering

[Chorus:]

There will be a day with no more tears,

No more pain, and no more fears

There will be a day when the burdens of this place

Will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face

But until that day,

We’ll hold on to you always

I know the journey seems so long

You feel you’re walking on your own

But there has never been a step

Where you’ve walked out all alone

Troubled soul don’t lose your heart

Cause joy and peace he brings

And the beauty that’s in store

Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings

That there will be a place with no more suffering

[Chorus]

I can’t wait until that day

Where the very one I’ve lived for always

Will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced

To touch the scars that rescued me

From a life of shame and misery

Oh, this is why, this is why I sing…

[Chorus:]

There will be a day with no more tears,

No more pain, and no more fears

There will be a day when the burdens of this place

Will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face

There will be a day with no more tears,

No more pain, and no more fears

There will be a day when the burdens of this place

Will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face

As we enter into a new week, cling to your inner joy.  Don’t let pain defeat you.
