At this point in the Bible, Isreal is not a land flowing with milk and honey. Instead, Isreal fled from their enemies. But even in their darkest hours, Isreal was reminded there's hope for the hopeless because of Jesus. Coming from the darkest of circumstances to save us, Jesus reminds us that He will use unqualified people and unlikely circumstances for His glory.
